Elasticity of Transit Ridership

When we increase fares or reduce service, we expect that transit ridership will decrease. How much it will decrease is the function of how elastic transit ridership is with regards to changes in fares or service. Knowing the elasticity is important because it allows us to estimate the ridership after fare increases and service reductions are enacted and thus the fare revenue resulting from those changes.
