While Congress passed, and Obama signed, a bill solving the immediate problems that were to be caused by the fiscal cliff (and even restored a transit commuter benefit that had lapsed), they have yet to deal with the spending reduction aspect of the fiscal cliff known as the "sequester". The "sequester", which has been postponed for at least a couple of months, would reduce all discretionary spending by 8%, negatively affecting the funding of several transit programs, including the New Starts Program and the TIGER program, as well as funding for AMTRAK.
